Staying at Mutton Barn means sharing your holiday with some very special neighbours. Tucked away high on the Alne Hills and surrounded by the Heart of England Forest, the barn sits in the middle of a living, breathing landscape. Barn owls at dusk

Our resident barn owls are the undisputed stars of the show. As the light fades and the sky softens, you may spot their pale shapes gliding silently along the hedgerows and over the fields below the barn. Watching them quarter the meadows from the comfort of the patio, or even from the warmth of the lounge, is an experience that guests talk about long after they leave.

Because of our elevated, secluded position, the night skies are wonderfully dark, making those owl silhouettes, stars and constellations all the more magical. Bring a pair of binoculars, pour a drink, and let the evening unfold around you.

Gary and Mary, our muntjac deer

We also share the hillside with a pair of muntjac deer affectionately known as Gary and Mary. They are shy but surprisingly bold when they think no one is looking. It’s not unusual to glance up from your morning coffee and see them quietly grazing at the edge of the garden or slipping between the trees.

Children in particular love “keeping watch” for them, and many guests tell us that spotting Gary and Mary has become one of their favourite memories of their stay.

Buzzards, weasels and everyday encounters

Look up, and you’ll often see buzzards circling lazily on the thermals above the Alne Hills, their distinctive calls echoing across the valley. Closer to the ground, quick flashes of movement may well be our local weasels darting along the field margins.

The beauty of Mutton Barn is that these encounters don’t require a special trip or an early start. They happen naturally around you as you relax in the garden, soak in the wood-fired hot tub, or wander out through the gate onto the Heart of England Way.

Open the garden gate and you step directly onto the Heart of England Way and the Arden Way, with 125 miles of footpaths to explore. These trails lead you through ancient woodland, across open fields and along quiet lanes, all rich with the sights and sounds of rural Warwickshire. It’s perfect for relaxing wildlife walks, whether you’re a keen birder, a photographer, or simply someone who enjoys unhurried time in nature.
